And they are getting more sophisticated! Savvy webmasters (and webmistresses) are using new "tricks", new technologies to make their websites more appealing and more interactive.

Imagine a website selling clothes. On each sales page, there are small images of each garment. Under each image is an invitation: "Click the image to see a larger picture".

Now the old ways to achieve this were:

• Open a pop-up window to show the larger image. Increasingly these would be stopped by pop-up blockers
• Open the larger image in a new browser window. Bad move. Never take people away from your sales page.

There's more ways of using this technology. I'll show you in a minute.

But here's another technology which is increasingly being used to add to information to a web page - "tool tips" or "info boxes". This uses the mouse-over effect to pop up a little information window, right next to the object being "moused over". Here's a typical use. Put your mouse cursor over this

This is a very simple example. This technology is capable of many more uses, and I'll show you some of them lower down this page.

But you need to know that both of these techniques use some very complex web scripts - not just one script but several. And they can be very complex to program to get the right effects.

Until now! Even if you are a novice webmaster, you'll find it really easy to produce these effects on your web pages, using..

How to display a whole web page - larger header

This is similar to example #1, except that the header is much more prominent. This can draw more attention to the title of your window, and make it easier for people to find the "close" button. View this effect by using this link:

How to show a series of web pages

This is ideal for, say, showing a tutorial. The user is shown the first web page, and can then navigate to other pages (as many as you like) using "forward" and "back" buttons in the header. My demo here shows some pages from my popular "Webmasters Tricks" site:

I can tell you that if you were coding this from scratch, this would take a lot of skill - and some trial and error! But WebLinker Pro makes it a short and easy task to carry out.

How to show a series of images (slide show)

OK, there are a number of scripts out there which enable you to show "slide shows" on your web pages. But these are stand-alone scripts. You can't do anything else with them. And often, they need to open the slide show in a new browser window (bad thing, as I keep on saying!). So I built a slide show into WebLinker Pro - and the visitor stays on your page. How to show a single image

In the clothing store example above, I showed you how to display a single image by clicking on another image. Here's another example, but using a text link to show the same garment:

A great way to display videos - and other fixed-dimension stuff

Right - let's put WebLinker Pro to real use! The next effect, using a fixed dimension window is a great way to display videos on your web page - again, without taking up a lot of space on your web page, and without letting people leave your page. With this effect, you can set the width and height of the popup.

The WebLinker InfoBoxes Software

This is a really cool tool to compliment the main WebLinker Pro software, and it's yet another great way to present info to your website visitors.

That's a really basic demo of what WebLinker InfoBoxes can do. Basically, if you can put it into HTML, you can put it into a WebLinker InfoBox. And, as with Component #1, you can achieve this just by filling in a few forms, copying and pasting, and uploading a few files.

Another way to display a larger image

Let's start with another way to show a larger image - and I'll stick with the clothing example. With Component #1, you could show a larger image by telling your visitor to click on the image. My WebLinker InfoBoxes software allows you to do this just by mousing over the image. Try this - put your mouse cursor over the image below:

OK, so the effect is a little different. Maybe you like it? Maybe not! But now you have the choice.

Mouse-over text: the old way and the WebLinker InfoBoxes way

The Old Way
You probably already know this, but when you put an image on a web page, it is good practice to put an "alt" tag for the image so that, when someone mouses over the image, a little bit of information pops up. It is also the text which is shown if the image is broken in any way. Let's use that old jacket again to demonstrate:

Note: the Firefox browser doesn't see the "alt" tag. You have to put a "title" tag in the image spec instead. That's what I've done here - if you're using Firefox. OK, that's really old tech. Also old tech, but less well-known, is the fact that you can also get the same effect with a hyperlink, using the "title" attribute - mouse over this link

The WebLinker InfoBox Way
Pretty tame, eh! OK, now let's use WebLinker InfoBoxes to really encourage people to click on the link! Please bear in mind that this following link is for demo purposes only. You aren't really going to get what the InfoBox promises!! Just mouse-over (don't click!) this link:

That's a bit more powerful, isn't it? That's a real incentive for people to click on the link! And remember, you can put almost any HTML inside a WebLinker InfoBox.

Mouse-Over Effect On A "Cell" In A Table

So, you can have a mouse-over effect on both images and hyperlinks.

But you can also pop up an InfoBox when someone simply puts their mouse cursor over part of a table. Let me show you. Here's a simple 2 x 2 table, and I've left the borders visible so you can see the boundaries between the cells. Just put your cursor anywhere over the bottom-right cell in the table:

So that's another neat use of WebLinker InfoBoxes!

But What About The Colours?

You will have noticed that all the WebLinker InfoBoxes on this page have the same colours for the background, the header bar and so on.

But you will be able to choose any colour scheme you want, so that the WebLinker InfoBoxes match your web page. You just select the colours from a simple form in the software:

You only do this once for a particular web page, no matter how many times you use an InfoBox on that page. The only restriction is that you must have all the InfoBoxes on a page in the same colour scheme, although you can change the colour of the text in the main body of each box using simple HTML.

OK, that's what WebLinker InfoBoxes can do, so I want to tie up a few loose ends..

Some Benefits I Haven't Yet Mentioned

No scripts to install! For each of the two components you get a small piece of software which you put on your Windows PC (sorry, Mac users, this won't work for you unless you have a PC emulator). Cross-browser compatibility. All the effects of both components have been tested on Internet Explorer v.6 and v.7, Firefox v.3.x and Opera (that covers 90% - 95% of all web users).
